Initially, boarding schools focused more on teaching religious sciences, such as tafsir, hadith, fiqh, and tasawwuf. However, nowadays, many boarding schools also offer formal education, such as language, math, and natural science lessons, which are expected to produce a generation that not only masters religious knowledge, but is also ready to face the challenges of the times.

Structure and Life at the Boarding School

       In boarding schools, students live in dormitories called “pondok”, where they are required to live their daily lives in accordance with the rules set by the pesantren. Life in pesantren is often very disciplined, with a dense routine, including worship, study, and various social and cultural activities. It aims to shape the character of students who are independent, disciplined, and responsible.

       One of the characteristics of Islamic boarding schools is the very close relationship between the kyai (leader of the pesantren) and the santri. Kyai not only acts as a teacher, but also as a spiritual and moral guide for the students. In this intense interaction, santri are taught to value knowledge, understand religious values, and practice good morals in everyday life.

       Education in Islamic boarding schools is divided into two, namely religious education and general education. Religious education in boarding schools usually covers basic sciences such as the Qur'an, hadith, fiqh, tawhid, and tasawwuf. Meanwhile, general education in some modern boarding schools includes subjects such as math, Indonesian language, English, and natural science. Boarding schools that combine these two types of education are often called “modern boarding schools” or “salafiah boarding schools”.

       Students in boarding schools are taught to have a deep understanding of religion, not only in the theoretical aspect but also in the practice in daily life.       However, despite this, boarding schools still maintain Islamic traditions and values as the main foundation of education. Islamic boarding schools are expected to be a model of education that brings together the advancement of science and a balanced practice of religion, so as to produce a generation that is not only intellectually intelligent, but also strong in moral and spiritual character.
